FAQ - MA Auto Reform 2008

Massachusetts Auto Insurance Reform 2008

Frequently Asked Questions.

Q - What changes are being made to the Massachusetts Auto Insurance market?

A -  The Massachustts Commissioner of Insurance has announced that insurance companies may now “compete” in the personal auto insurance market by setting their own rates and potentially offering new coverage options. The Commissioner will closely scrutinize company rate filings and she refers to the new plan as “managed competition”.  A second part of the new plan is an assigned risk plan for high-risk drivers (MAIP).  Check out our MA Auto Reform page on our website.

Q - When does the new plan go into effect?

A -  Applies to policies that renew on or after 04/01/2008.  Had your review yet?  Contact the agency at 978-372-2790 for a detailed review and coverage options!  Has your agent been proactive in “getting the word out” to you or your family?  If not, why not REFER your family, friends and Neighbors to Sullivan Insurance & Financial – they will thank you for it!

Sullivan Insurance & Financial offers car insurance throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire, specifically in the following Massachusetts communities: Haverhill Auto Insurance, Bradford Auto Insurance, Groveland Auto Insurance, Georgetown Auto Insurance, North Andover Auto Insurance, Andover Auto Insurance, West Newbury Auto Insurance, Byfield Auto Insurance, Boxford Auto Insurance, Merrimack Auto Insurance, Methuen Auto Insurance, Lawrence Auto Insurance, Amesbury Auto Insurance, Rowely Auto Insurance, Newburyport Auto Insurance, Salisbury Auto Insurance and Newbury Auto Insurance.

Although a lot of this information focuses on Massachusetts auto, we also offer auto insurance (as well as all other lines of insurance) throughout New Hampshire, specifically in the following communities:  Plaistow Auto Insurance, Atkinson Auto Insurance, Salem NH Auto Insurance, Hampstead Auto Insurance, Newton Auto Insurance, Kingston Auto Insurance, East Kingston Auto Insurance, Seabrook Auto Insurance, Kensington Auto Insurance, East Hampstead Auto Insurance, Derry Auto Insurance, East Derry Auto Insurance, Windham Auto Insurance, Londonderry Auto Insurance, Pelham Auto Insurance, Sandown Auto Insurance, and Danville Auto Insurance.

Q - My policy renews in January/February/March of 2008. Can I cancel my auto insurance policy and shop for new coverage after April 1st?

A - You could, but we would not suggest that. Your policy could be subject to the state mandated cancellation penalty (short rate penalty – some carriers will waive the short rate cancellation) and your policy will renew in 2008 with an average rate decrease of 11.7% as decided by the Commissioner of Insurance. The short rate penalty may wipe out any potential savings. Also, we do anticipate some start up “bugs” in the new Massachusetts Automobile Insurance system that should be ironed out by the time your policy renews in 2009.  That said, you should consider having a detailed review to make sure you are receiving the best coverage at a competitive price, and become familiar with new coverage and discounts so when you policy does renew you can take advantage of the new options!

Q - Are there other ways I can save now on my auto and home insurance costs?

A - Yes.  We continue to see enhanced account credits for those who have their home insurance and auto insurance with the same carrier and/or agency. If you currently do not have your home insurance with our agency (or only have your auto insurance), we would be happy to provide a no obligation estimate for your other insurance coverage, JUST CONTACT THE AGENCY.

Q - What about the Assigned Risk Plan (called MAIP) for high-risk drivers?

A - As part of the new plan, there will be a change in how “high risk” drivers will obtain insurance (SEE our FAQ for the new MAIP Plan). In the 1st year, the change will be minimal and a majority of these drivers will be able to keep their present auto insurance policy/insurance company. Once fully implemented, the MAIP will randomly assign insurance companies to cover high-risk drivers (currently 10 Points or above are considered “high risk” drivers). High-risk drivers will no longer be able to choose their insurance company. However, you may still do business with us, your agent, and we will have direct access to the MAIP, as well as access to over 40 insurance carriers through our membership in Insurance Services of New England (ISNE).

Q - How will it be decided that a driver has to purchase insurance through the Assigned Risk Plan (MAIP)?

A - As part of the managed competition, the Commissioner of Insurance will allow insurance companies to “underwrite” drivers based on driving histories. If no insurer is willing to offer voluntary coverage to the driver, they will have to obtain coverage through the MAIP (SEE our FAQ for the new MAIP Plan).

Q - What are you as my independent insurance agent doing to prepare for changes in Massachusetts Auto Insurance 2008?

A - As an Independent Insurance Agent, we have traditionally competed in ALL other lines of the insurance business every day (in other states like New Hampshire, as well as with your current home insurance, life insurance, commercial insurance, commerce auto insurance, business owner policies, business insurance coverage, commecial insurance, boat insurance, motorycycle insurance, and many other forms of coverage).  We fully intend to thrive in this new system as we have access to over 40 insurance carriers. All of our account managers that handle car insurance have already taken training classes and will continue to attend training as more changes are implemented. Also, as a member of Insurance Services of New England, an aggregation of agencies in New England, we have access to almost every major insurance market in Massachusetts through “A” rated regional and national insurance carriers.

Testimonials
Outstanding agent I have been purchasing insurance all my life, but never have I had such a detailed review to discover coverage and discounts that I may not have known about or may not have coverage for - and the agent didn't tell me what coverage I needed to have, I selected my coverage based on the detail review and issues I am trying to protect against. The agent even met with me on Saturday outside of their normal business hours! Not many agents do that today. They even reviewed some important non insurance issues that I had forgotten to take care of, like updating my will and adding a healthcare proxy. The last issue we reviewed was my financial investments and changes that I need to make since I am getting older and need to better protect myself against changes in the market. In one trip I received the best insurance review I have ever had, updated my financial investment ... What more can anyone ask from their insurance agent - one stop shopping for everything and a detailed review that showed how all my coverage interacts with each other. What a great experience. I have found the agent I have needed all my life! Fred S.
